Making the switch from electrical storage heating

Chris and Marie
Rinnai Infinity 26 - LPG

When Chris and his wife Marie bought a new home in Whangaparoa in 2001, it had everything they wanted... almost everything that is.

Their previous home had an electric hot water cylinder and that was something they were quite certain they didn't want to repeat in their new home. Unfortunately the new home also had an electric hot water cylinder. Chris and Marie decided it had to go.

"We were determined that we wanted a Rinnai Infinity gas continuous flow hot water in our new home," says Chris.  "I know it might seem crazy to rip out a brand new water cylinder, but it just doesn't make any sense to keep hot water sitting in a hot water cylinder. It just eats energy - up to 40% of your total electric power bill is likely to be hot water heating. Aside from the energy efficiency issues there's also the problem of hot water running out - especially when everyone wants to take a shower at the same time."

There was no natural gas supply in the neighborhood, so Chris and Marie opted to use bottled LPG gas to connect to a Rinnai Infinity 26.

"Running off LPG is straightforward. We have a dual flow system, which means both bottles are being used together. Once they reach 30% capacity the platform tilts forward indicating we have to ring our supplier."

"We've got temperature controllers in the kitchen and the bathroom, so you can set the temperature hotter in the kitchen and at 40 degrees in the bathroom, which is the perfect shower temperature and it means you don't have to mix hot water with cold - which is what you have to do off a cylinder. You get full mains pressure and so long as it?s set up correctly there's no drop in pressure if you've got two showers going at once - endless hot water and heaps of pressure!"
