Frost Protection Options

Depending on where you live you will need varying levels of frost protection for your solar system Rinnai offer three forms of frost protection

Draining

This is the most effective frost protection system. It uses standard panels in conjunction with a special “Draining” pump and solenoid Tank Kit.

Water is drained from the panels when the temperatures falls and also when the power supply is interrupted. When the power is reconnected and the temperature deemed warmed enough the panels automatically refill.

The system is effective and warranted to -15°C

This system is recommended for areas that regularly incur frosts or interruptions of power

FTC

This system consists of specially designed Frost Tolerate Collectors (panels) which accommodate freezing water via an Expansion Tube. The system is not power dependent and will still function without electricity

The system is effective and warranted to -5° C

It doesn’t offer much protection in the event of a very quick snap frost and is recommended for areas that incur mild frosts on a rare occasion.

Circulating (Limited)

This system utilizes the pumping action of standard split solar systems. When the sensors notice that the temperature has fallen to set levels warm water from the tank is pumped into the panels.

It is only effective with systems that utilize an electric boost and requires power to operate. As such it is limited and only suited to areas that very rarely incur frosts such as coastal upper North Island, where ambient air temperature only rarely falls below 3° C.

There is no warranty protection offered to due to any damage caused by to frost.
